Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara County
An earthquake on June 29, 1925, wrecked much of downtown Santa Barbara, and the city chose to rebuild in a single style: white walls, red tile roofs and wrought iron, borrowed from Spain. The county courthouse, finished in 1929, is the showpiece, and visitors can climb its clock tower for a view from the mountains to the sea.
